Aims & Objectives
This four-day course provides the full Level 1 grounding in infrared thermography, taking delegates from the underlying theory of heat and thermal radiation through to the practical operation of thermal imaging equipment, accurate temperature measurement, and the production of professional inspection reports.
The course concludes with a certification examination and covers the principles needed to apply thermography within a condition monitoring programme.
Suitability
Those undertaking thermographic inspections who need a recognised Level 1 qualification, including maintenance, electrical and mechanical inspection personnel. The Introduction to Thermography course is a useful precursor.Requirements

Syllabus
Day 1 - Principles & Theory
- Introduction to thermography: the nature of heat and temperature, measurement and temperature conversion
- Heat transfer theory: conduction, convection, radiation and change of state
- The electromagnetic spectrum
- Thermal radiation principles: blackbody and realbody, absorbance, emittance, reflectance and transmittance
- Overview of infrared equipment and features
Day 2 - Equipment & Measurement
- Hands-on equipment familiarisation
- Qualitative operations: selecting the best perspective, optics, lenses, filters and optimising the image
- Recognising and dealing with reflections and convection
- Qualitative analysis techniques: signatures, symmetry, comparison, contrast and change
- Temperature measurement: requirements for accurate measurement, isotherms, range and methodology
- Performing temperature measurements, including direct and relative measurement and checking equipment calibration
Day 3 - Resolution, Applications & Reporting
- Qualitative versus quantitative measurement
- Instrument resolution, accuracy and drift/compensation
- Spatial resolution: distance/size relationship, errors and atmospheric effects
- Safe working practices
- Applications: maintenance strategies, with electrical and mechanical examples
- ISO standards for condition monitoring
- Report writing and the characteristics of a good report
Day 4 - Condition Monitoring & Examination
- Condition monitoring programmes: principles and complementary technologies
- Design, acceptance testing and implementation
- Relevant application codes and standards
- Certification examination
