Welder Training (MIG & Arc/MMA)

Practical, one-to-one onsite welder training covering both MIG and Arc/MMA (stick) welding, from machine setup and safe working through to producing strong, clean welds.

Aims & Objectives

This course provides hands-on, one-to-one welder training in both MIG and Arc/MMA welding. Delegates learn how to set up their welding machine correctly for the material and process, how to work safely, and how to produce good, neat and structurally sound welds across a range of joint types and positions.

Suitability

Individuals who need practical welding skills, whether new to welding or looking to improve technique, delivered on a one-to-one onsite basis.

Requirements

Training is delivered onsite on a one-to-one basis. Access to appropriate welding equipment and a suitable working area is required, along with the correct PPE.

Syllabus

Machine Setup

  • Setting up a MIG welder: wire feed rate versus amperage for the material thickness
  • Setting up an Arc/MMA welder: choosing the correct welding rod size and amperage for the work
  • Understanding welding rod ratings and which rods to use for the application
  • Correct positive and negative lead connections
  • Gas flow and shielding for MIG welding

Health & Safety

  • Ensuring good ventilation around the working area
  • Shielding the area with welding curtains or screens to protect others from arc flash
  • Correct fire extinguishers on hand before work begins
  • Appropriate PPE and protective clothing to prevent UV burns, heat burns and eye damage
  • Checking equipment for defects and avoiding wet conditions

Welding Technique

  • Reading the weld pool and maintaining a steady, uniform bead
  • Achieving correct penetration and avoiding undercut
  • Vertical-up, vertical-down and overhead welding techniques
  • Welding materials of different thicknesses

Practical Weld Types

  • Butt weld (flat/horizontal position)
  • Lap fillet weld (flat/horizontal position)
  • Tee lap fillet weld (flat/horizontal and vertical positions)
  • Building up thicker fillet welds in multiple runs

Notes

Comprehensive notes will be given to all students who attend the course.
