Gas Bottle Inspection Training

A half-day practical course for employees who use gas bottles and need to know their equipment is safe to use, covering inspection, checks and planned maintenance of gas control equipment.

Aims & Objectives

This course is for all employees whose job involves using gas bottles and who therefore need to know that their equipment is safe to use. Delegates will learn how to select, check, inspect and maintain gas control equipment such as pressure regulators, flashback arrestors and hoses.

All employees whose job involves using gas bottles and associated gas control equipment.

Requirements

The practical session requires access to the delegates' own workplace and equipment. This allows recommendations to be made for the maintenance of fixed systems.

Syllabus

Introduction & Legislation

  • Introduction — aims and objectives
  • Applicable legislation, available guidance and relevant codes of practice
  • Definitions: portable versus fixed gas control equipment

Selecting Gas Control Equipment

  • The selection of gas control equipment
  • The function of pressure regulators, flashback arrestors, hoses and associated fittings
  • Criteria for the selection of pressure regulators, flashback arrestors and hoses
  • Applicable standards

Safety Checks & Inspection

  • Recommended 'before use' safety checks
  • Checks to be carried out for each piece of equipment by the user
  • Recommended periodic checks and functional tests
  • Additional steps, beyond the 'visual' before-use checks, to undertake as part of the planned inspection procedure for pressure regulators, flashback arrestors, hoses etc.

Planned Maintenance & Records

  • The administration of planned maintenance for gas control equipment — keeping records and labelling equipment
  • Demonstration of how to carry out planned maintenance for:
    • Pressure regulators (single and two-stage)
    • Flashback arrestors (re-set and non-re-set types)
    • Hoses, non-return valves, blowpipes and torches etc.

Practical Session

  • Practical session for delegates (requiring access to their workplace), including recommendations for the maintenance of fixed systems
  • Closing comments and post-course questionnaire

Notes

Fully comprehensive notes will be given to all delegates who attend the course.

Certification

On completion of this course delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance, which will be valid for three years.
