Trailer Towing Training

Aims & Objectives

This one-day course gives drivers the knowledge and skills to tow trailers safely, covering how a vehicle handles differently when towing, safe coupling and load security, and the observation, positioning and control needed to tow safely on different road types and in confined spaces.

Suitability

Drivers who tow, or are about to tow, trailers as part of their work.

Requirements

No prior towing experience is required.

Syllabus

Loads & Coupling

• Overview of the type of items to be towed
• Coupling and uncoupling
• Ensuring a safe load

Vehicle Handling When Towing

• Vehicle handling dynamics: towing versus non-towing
• Understanding vehicle performance when towing
• How general vehicle control impacts on safe towing

Manoeuvring & Observation

• Reversing and manoeuvres while towing
• Dealing with confined spaces when towing
• Advanced observation and mirror use when towing
• How observation impacts on safe towing

On the Road

• Towing on different road types
• Road positioning and allowing adequate space
• Safe junction positioning when towing
• Merging from junctions with a load
• Dealing with emergency situations when towing

Notes

Fully comprehensive notes will be given to all delegates who attend the course.

Certification

On completion of this one-day course delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance, which will be valid for three years.
