Aims & Objectives
On completion of this course, operators will know their statutory duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, how to identify the machine, its terminology and daily maintenance, the safety aspects of operating this type of machine, and the effect of load size, weight, gradients and ground conditions on machine stability.
The trainee will be expected to reach a level of operating skill that complies with the standard laid down by the Health and Safety Executive and all current legislation, and to demonstrate safe and effective practical operation.
Suitability
Operators required to drive tow tugs, tractors and trailers on site. Delegates complete a health questionnaire and declare relevant previous forklift truck experience at the start of the course.Requirements

Theory
- Statutory duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations)
- HSG136 Workplace Transport Safety
- The operator's safety code
- Battery maintenance and charging procedures
- Pre-use checks on both tractor and trailer
- The loading and stability of trailers
- Hitching and unhitching trailers
- Manoeuvring in open and confined areas, with and without trailers
- Hydraulic controls
Pre-Shift Check & Inspection
- Identifying the component parts of the tractor and trailer
- Carrying out a full pre-shift inspection of all items
- Recognising what could make the tractor or trailer unsafe to operate
Demonstration & Practice
- Driving and operating the tractor safely and efficiently, with and without a trailer
- Carrying out pre-use checks on both tractor and trailer
- Battery maintenance and charging procedures
- Hitching and unhitching trailers safely
- Loading a trailer safely and correctly to maintain stability
Assessment
- A practical test covering all aspects of the training programme within a set time limit
- Course feedback and completion of training records
Notes
Fully comprehensive notes will be given to all delegates who attend the course.
Certification
