Product Review: Eye bolts (Temporary Fall Protection)

An eye bolt is an anchor device used to firmly attach a securing eye to a structure so that ropes and
cables maybe attached to them via hooks, rings or carabiners.

Before each use, anchor devices such as eye bolts should be visually inspected and checked
manually, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. These checks should be performed by
a competent person, preferably the user. (CSS offer practical training courses for users to become
competent in the use, maintenance and inspection of temporary fall arrest devices such as anchor
points and harnesses).

At least once every 12 months eye bolts and other anchor devices should be subjected to examination
in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions by a competent person. If used for rope access
purposes, anchor devices come under the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998,
which requires an examination every 6 months.

A suitable label should be provided clearly showing the date of the next inspection and the uses for
which the anchor device is intended, e.g. "For Fall Arrest Only" or "For Rope Access Only".
CSS Worksafe offer a comprehensive range of removable or fixed eye bolts and single point anchors
for use in brick, concrete, masonry, steel, dry lined walls or in conjunction with plasterboard,
cladding etc. and also offer inspections of eye bolts and single point anchors.
